Kenley Heritage Day
12-00am – 5.00pm Sunday 11th September – Portcullis Field and airfield perimeter
The launch of the Kenley Revival Project will be held on the Portcullis field and airfield perimeter of Kenley Airfield at the annual Kenley Airfield Friends’ Group Heritage Day on Sunday 11 September from 12-5pm. This very popular day will feature all the regular attractions plus some new ones. We’ll have free 1940’s food tasting, guided heritage walks including a new family tour, live 1940’s jazz band, BBQ, refreshments including the RAFA club cake stall, local community & trade stands, military vehicles, classic scooters and long wave radio demonstrations. Please note there will be no air show or flypast this year.
New for this year will be a full size replica Spitfire and Hurricane and visitors can sit in the cockpits and have their photo taken for a small donation to the Kenley Airfield Friends Group. We’ll also have a Battle of Britain exhibition trailer which contains memorabilia, information and other items for visitors to read through and look at plus a re-enactor in RAF uniform to guide people through the exhibits. The Portcullis Club bar will be open all afternoon with the opportunity to look around and see all the fascinating memorabilia housed in this historic building. Finally there will be a land train running around the perimeter track with a live commentary so that those less able to get around can see Kenley and learn about the significance of Kenley Airfield’s heritage.
The event is a chance to understand more about the project and to see our volunteering opportunities. The project is a 3 year Heritage Lottery funded project in partnership with the Kenley Airfield Friends Group, City of London Corporation and Historic England which aims to preserve and protect the most intact fighter airfield from World War II.
We are encouraging visitors to go green and to travel to the event using our free shuttle bus service which will be on loop from Whyteleafe and Caterham stations to the venue throughout the day. Timetable for this can be found here.
Please always remember, however, that Kenley is an active airfield, so for your safety remain outside of the yellow line at all times.
Hope to see you there!
